Trees are the biggest cause of power interruptions. New regulations spell out the landowners and the power line owner's responsibilities.

Make sure you are prepared for bad weather.
If you are building a new property you will need to make arrangements to connect to our network.
Step one is to apply to connect your new property to our network. Once this is done you will given a unique number (ICP) once you have this number you can contact any of the energy retailers who have supply agreements with our network.
You can have an application form posted to you by ringing 0800 100 202 or by downloading the PDF form.
The application form describes your responsibilities for care and maintenance of your service line, control of vegetation, and costs you are likely to incur or you can view the main points on-line.
Requirements for Electrical Installations
YOU OWN that part of the service line which is located inside the boundary of your property (the blue lines on the diagram).
WE OWN that part of the service line which is located outside the boundary of your property (the red lines on diagram). Where there are any unformed (or "paper") roads between the boundary of your property and the nearest public (or "formed") road maintained by the local district council, you own the service line to the point where it reaches the public road.
Any transformer which we have installed on your property, and which is connected to our network, is owned by us (unless we have specifically agreed that you or someone else owns this; this is not normally the case).
You must pay for any repairs or alterations: This can be done by Counties Power or by other qualified contractors.
