Police help to bring workers home safely

13 September 2019

Counties Manukau Police and local lines company Counties Power are teaming up to deliver an important road safety message around slowing down through work sites.

The campaign, which includes road policing on site and advertising, aims to remind drivers of the importance of adhering to traffic management instructions after an incident occurred last year.

A Counties Power field worker was struck by a car on a work site in Pukekohe in October.  The vehicle driver, speeding and distracted while using their phone, drove straight through traffic management safety measures and cones.

Sergeant Wayne Paxton, Road Policing Sergeant based in Pukekohe, says local Police will be monitoring work sites to ensure drivers are adhering to the 30km/h speed.

“These workers are people who are just going about their work and have loved ones wanting them to make it home safely. Please slow down through work sites, follow all traffic management instructions and speed limits and never use a handheld phone while driving. Our teams will be vigilant in enforcing the speed restrictions.”

Worksafe report that 22 workers in New Zealand were killed due to an incident involving a vehicle over the last year.

Counties Power Chief Executive Judy Nicholl says the company needs the community’s help to bring their teams home safely.

“Slowing down through work sites is an important and timely message to the public as infrastructure providers take advantage of more favourable build weather as we head into the summer months. It only takes a speeding driver to lose control or a moments inattention to have tragic consequences.  Help us keep our teams safe and follow all traffic management instructions.
